Carragher admits Liverpool need ‘freshness’ as Thiago links continue

Jamie Carragher thinks that Liverpool need to sign some more players to add “freshness” and keep the current squad on their toes.

Liverpool have only made one signing since they became Premier League champions. Kostas Tsimikas arrived to provide competition for Andy Robertson at left-back.

Thiago Alcantara continues to be linked with Liverpool, where he could add a different element to their midfield. However, Manchester United have reportedly joined the race for the Spaniard, giving the Reds cause for concern in their pursuit.

Many feel that Liverpool do not need to strengthen much after their title win. But their former defender Jamie Carragher thinks a signing could stimulate the current crop of players at Anfield.

He told Sky Sports: “Three or four years of the same team, sometimes it just needs a bit of freshness added to it, mentally as much as anything for the rest of the team.

“It’ll just be interesting to see whether they get a signing or two across the line.”

His fellow Sky pundit Gary Neville, agrees that Liverpool could fall into a trap of keeping things the same too much.

But the former Man Utd defender thinks signing Thiago would solve those problems.

Neville added: “That demand of the same squad, the same players, the same messages, the same relationships, the same jokes for two or three years – just something slightly different in the dressing room, that addition, just sometimes can become a little bit draining.

“And I think the idea of Thiago coming for Liverpool is a big moment, because I think it deals with all those issues that can occur after two or three seasons.”

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed he is expecting a bid for Thiago in the coming days.

Richards: Man City still favourites for title

Meanwhile, another Sky pundit, Micah Richards, thinks Liverpool still need to add more depth in attack. The former Manchester City defender thinks his old side remain the favourites for the title because of that.

He said: “If Salah and Mane were to get injured – I’m not saying what they’ve got in, because Origi, look what he’s done, he’s scored some very important goals for Liverpool, but would you trust him for a 20 game season?

“And that’s why for me, Man City are always the favourites, just because of the squad.”
