Chelsea starlet Hudson-Odoi sets hugely ambitious personal target

Callum Hudson-Odoi has set himself an ambitious target of contributing to a goal in every game he plays for Chelsea.

Hudson-Odoi has been on the verge of the first team since making his senior debut for the club in 2017. He has already made 86 appearances for the senior side.

His output in those games has been impressive for a player who only turned 20 in November. So far, Hudson-Odoi has 13 goals and 15 assists for Chelsea.

The wide man wants to improve on those numbers even further, though. He has now outlined his aims to become a player that opponents fear.

Asked by Chelsea’s official website about his record of scoring 31 goals in 55 starts at academy level, he said he wants to replicate similar figures in the first team.

“In the academy days, when you’re seeing numbers like that you’re like ‘wow’ and you want to try and replicate that in the first team as well,” he said. “But it’s obviously a much tougher league and it’s hard to get goals.

“You want to be that player who every team fears and where you have a target to get a goal or an assist for the team in every match you play, to help the team as much as possible, because that contributes at the end of the game. You scoring or assisting helps the team win so I look at it like that.

“If I can get a goal one game and then maybe the next game I get an assist and the next game a goal again, it’s helpful for all aspects. I want to be one of those players that you know is regularly on the scoresheet.”

Hudson-Odoi outlines role change

Since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel, Hudson-Odoi has adapted his role slightly for Chelsea. In recent weeks, he has featured as a wing-back instead of a more attacking winger.

The England international is happy to take on the challenge.

“It was obviously a different role for me and something new I hadn’t experienced before,” he said of his new role. “But I saw it as a challenge.

“It’s something that I know I’m capable of doing. If it’s offensively, I can use my abilities to do that going forward, but defensively as well now I’ve got to be more aware because I’m not playing as a winger.

“I’m playing wing-back so I have to get back much more. It has definitely been a good experience for me to learn a new position as well under the manager and it’s going well for me.

“I actually enjoy playing there – it’s not a bad thing for me. I really enjoy it so hopefully I can keep improving and hopefully keep doing well there.”
