Chelsea have submitted an offer of €30m for Getafe left-back Marc Cucurella, according to reports in Spain.
Left-back is one of the key areas Frank Lampard is looking for reinforcements in this summer. The Blues have already strengthened their attack with Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, but need to bolster their defence too.
With doubts over the futures of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri, Lampard is on the lookout for a new left-back. Ben Chilwell had been his main target, but Leicester’s high valuation of the England international is proving off-putting.
The answer to the problem may come from Spain. According to AS, Chelsea are willing to pay €30m to sign Marc Cucurella from Getafe.
The 22-year-old joined Getafe last summer from Barcelona, where he came through the famous La Masia academy. While his former club have been keeping tabs on him, Chelsea could now make their own bid.
Cucurella has a €25m release clause, but Chelsea are willing to offer €30m to ensure they win the race. That’s around one-third of the value Leicester are asking for Chilwell.
AS claim that Lampard has noticed two key qualities in Cucurella that make him an ideal target – his work rate and versatility. The Spain Under-21 international is also capable of playing on the wing.
Cucurella had been linked to Chelsea’s rivals Arsenal, before the Gunners tied down Bukayo Saka to a longer-term contract.
With their rivals now out of the running, Chelsea could have a clearer chance of landing Cucurella. Reports suggest they are also close to selling Emerson, which would free up the funds for the Getafe star.
