Chelsea formulate familiar plan for £22m forgotten man

Chelsea will allow Davide Zappacosta to spend another season on loan at Roma after an injury-blighted 2019-20, according to reports in Italy.

Zappacosta was given the chance to rebuild his career away from Stamford Bridge this season when moving back to Italy on loan, but he only managed 12 minutes of action before tearing his ACL, ruling him out for most of the campaign.

The right-back is approaching a return, although football in Italy is, like England, suspended for the foreseeable future – meaning there are doubts over his future.

However, Corriere Dello Sport (via Sport Witness) clarify the situation by revealing that Chelsea are ready to send him out on loan again next season – to the same club.

His contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2022, so this would be Chelsea’s last chance to see his valuation raise before cutting their losses on the man they signed for £22.5m in 2017.

Roma themselves are still no closer to finding their regular starting right-back, so there may be an opportunity for Zappacosta to return to form next season.

Chelsea already have captain Cesar Azpilicueta in the position, while youngster Reece James has also taken his chances to impress this season.
