Chelsea, Fulham battle for PSG keeper who has bought house in London

Chelsea have identified Alphonse Areola as an alternative goalkeeper target to Edouard Mendy, according to reports in France.

The Blues have spent heavily on outfield players this summer but still need to address their problems in goal.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has not lived up to expectations since his world record move for a goalkeeper two years ago. Therefore, Chelsea want more competition for him.

Reports on Monday indicated that they were closing in on the signing of Mendy from Rennes. Petr Cech has played a key role in persuading them to target him.

It has even been claimed that Rennes have already lined up a replacement for Mendy, in the shape of Alphonse Areola. However, Le10 Sport now claim he is an option for Chelsea as well.

The French outlet claims that Thiago Silva could help lure Areola to Chelsea. Silva has signed on at Stamford Bridge after leaving Paris Saint-Germain – Areola’s current club.

Therefore, the report speculates that Silva could act as an “intermediary” to help Chelsea sign Areola.

The French World Cup winner spent three seasons as Silva’s teammate in the PSG first team, in between a series of loan spells.

Fulham interested in Areola

Elsewhere, though, Sky Sports claim that Areola is a transfer target for Fulham, who regained promotion to the Premier League this year.

Fulham would reportedly like to take Areola on loan for the season. There is no room for the goalkeeper back at PSG, who have Keylor Navas and, coincidentally, former Fulham loanee Sergio Rico, as their current options in goal.

Hence, the French shot-stopper is likely to leave in search of more gametime. And London could be a likely destination, after his wife revealed recently that they had bought a house in the English capital.

Fulham can offer Areola a bigger salary than Rennes, who will need a strong goalkeeper if they sell Mendy. However, unlike Fulham, the Ligue 1 outfit will play in the Champions League this season.
