Chelsea transfer chief given green light to move for Barcelona defender

Chelsea have received a boost after transfer chief Marina Granovskaia was given encouragement to make a move for young Barcelona defender Xavier Mbuyamba.

The 18-year-old is reportedly of interest to Blues boss Frank Lampard who is looking to strengthen his defensive options ahead of next season.

Chelsea have struggled defensively at times this season, conceding 39 goals in 29 Premier League games, giving them the worst defensive record in the current top seven.

The likes of Fikayo Tomori and Reece James have impressed, but Lampard is hoping to bring in new faces as he looks to build on what has been a promising first campaign in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

It had looked like he might miss out on Mbuyamba though, with the player at one stage set to be part of a swap deal that would see Kaly Sene head to the Camp Nou from Juventus, however that exchange now seems to be off.

Plus, with the teenager contracted to the La Liga giants until 2023, Barca were in a strong position to decide the future of the Dutchman but according to a report from Spanish outlet Sport, cited on the Daily Express, they have now told Mbuyamba he will be allowed to leave on a free transfer when the market re-opens.

That means the London club may be able to land their man after all and are said to be leading the race to secure his signature, but face competition from Real Madrid and Inter Milan, while Juventus are still believed to be considering a move.

Mbuyamba can play as a central defender or at right back, and his age makes him the type of player Lampard is hoping to build his Chelsea team around.

Although he has not made a senior appearance for Barca’s senior side, he has impressed for their under-19s and trained alongside the first team and is expected to have a bright future in the game.
