Chelsea have ‘money saved’ to rival Man Utd in huge battle for Ronaldo

Chelsea have emerged as shock contenders to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, according to a report.

Doubts have arisen recently about Ronaldo’s long-term future at Juventus. While the Italian club naturally remain happy with his output, they are concerned about his wages.

Therefore, they may have to move on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner to balance the books. Even though he will be 36 next summer, it would likely spark a huge scramble for his signature.

There has already been talk of a sensational return to Manchester United, where he previously developed his potential and earned the first of his Ballons d’Or.

Some have suggested he should try his luck with a less traditional big name, such as Wolves. The Molineux side already have a large number of Portuguese players, of course.

But now, a new report has claimed that Chelsea could make their own bid for Ronaldo.

According to Don Balon, Frank Lampard has made contact with the player to tell him he would like him at Stamford Bridge next season. Ronaldo’s response is not yet clear.

Chelsea have shown their ambition in the transfer market in recent months. They spent more heavily than any other Premier League club in the summer 2020 transfer window.

The likes of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz have all injected fresh quality into Lampard’s squad. But a deal for Ronaldo would eclipse all of them in significance.

The report claims Lampard “still has a lot of money saved” for the potential signing of Ronaldo, who is also considering a departure from Juventus.

Ronaldo to partner Werner?

Paris Saint-Germain are mentioned as another contender for his signature, as are United. But Chelsea see him as someone “who solves matches by himself”, making him an ideal target.

The Blues already have Werner up front, but Don Balon suggest the German needs a top class player alongside him to thrive. While Tammy Abraham did well last season, there are doubts over whether he can be that player on a regular basis.

There would be no such doubts about Ronaldo, meaning he could become the missing piece of Lampard’s puzzle.
