Thomas Tuchel gets green light to break Chelsea transfer record

Jan Oblak TEAMtalk

Jan Oblak remains on Chelsea’s wanted list despite with Thomas Tuchel’s men prepared to smash their transfer record to sign the goalkeeper, claims a report.

Tuchel may only have been in situ at Stamford Bridge for two weeks, but already he is working behind the scenes to strengthen the squad in the summer.

Indeed earlier this week Todofijaches claimed Chelsea have taken the first step towards strengthening their rearguard next season. The Spanish outlet claimed the Blues have reached an agreement in principle for defender Jerome Boateng to move to Stamford Bridge.

And the same outlet have now claimed that Tuchel, whose side have conceded just once in his tenure, is looking to tighten up at the back.

Todofijaches report that Atletico Madrid keeper Oblak is wanted by Tuchel and Chelsea this summer.

The Slovenia stopper has long since been linked with Chelsea and if the 28-year-old can win some silverware this season it’s understood he could move one.

Oblak’s Atletico are top of LaLiga and eight points clear of Barcelona and Real Madrid. While they face Chelsea later this month in the Champions League knockout phase.

The outlet claim Oblak is pondering a new challenge and Chelsea are “favourites” to land him.

Chelsea have apparently “asked twice about the goalkeeper and has even held several meetings with his agent”.

The former Benfica keeper, who has 11 clean sheets from 20 LaLiga game this term is happy in Madrid. And he has two years remaining on his contract.

Atletico would be loathed to lose him. But with the LaLiga title under their belt and a huge fee they may decide to cash in on the player.

Mendy ‘best on the list’

The report claims Chelsea “would be willing to break the records for the transfer of the goalkeeper”. What’s more it’s understood Marina Granovskaia will sanction a €90m, including variables to land Oblak.

Tuchel’s project in west London has been labelled “very ambitious”. The German coach seems keen on upgrading his current crop of keepers.

Edouard Mendy, a Frank Lampard signing last summer, has been his No.1 in the four games so far, with Kepa Arrizabalaga on the bench,

Kepa remains the world’s most expensive goalkeeper after his £72m arrival from Athletic Bilbao in 2018. That deal, along with the £72m spent on Kai Havertz remain Chelsea’s biggest transfers.

Kepa though fell out of favour under Lampard. That led to Mendy signing for £22m in September and he was quickly installed as the No.1.

Petr Cech played a huge role in signing Mendy. The former Chelsea star said the former Rennes man was  the “the best on the list” of  goalkeeper targets.
