The agent of a once crucial Chelsea midfielder insists his client is ‘appreciated by many clubs’, and revealed which current Barcelona star the Blues rejected the chance to sign.
Frank Lampard’s side have been the story of the summer so far regarding the transfer window.
High-profile acquisitions including the likes of Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell have grabbed the headlines. But the marquee attraction of German ace Kai Havertz could yet steal the show.
The latest on his impending move was detailed here, but the overlooked aspect of Chelsea’s business regards their sales.
Veteran wingers Pedro and Willian both departed, while significant fees were recouped for Alvaro Morata and Mario Pašalić.
Midfield metronome Jorginho has fallen down the pecking order under Lampard, though still made 31 appearances in the league last term.
And according to the player’s agent, Joao Santos, The Blues chose to snub a swap deal for Jorginho that would’ve seen ex-Juventus and current Barcelona ace Miralem Pjanic call Stamford Bridge his new home.
Santos said: “Yes. Juventus had proposed an exchange with Pjanic to Chelsea which the English club did not take into consideration. But Paratici [Juventus’ Chief Football Officer] never called me.
“Would he have gone to Juve with [Maurizio] Sarri? I think so.”
Pjanic eventually joined Barcelona after Brazilian Arthur was lined up to move in the opposite direction.
Jorginho courting interest
The Italy international could be deemed surplus to requirements this summer, and Santos admitted a move could be on the cards if the club decide to cut ties.
“Jorginho and the transfer market? Today he is thinking of the national team, of the two games to play. He is happy with Mancini’s call and wants to make his contribution,” the player’s representative explained.
“He has a three year contract with Chelsea. The transfer market is long, it will last until October 5th.
“And if Chelsea think that the boy is no longer part of the project, I would find an alternative solution. Last year he played forty games with Chelsea and is important for the national team.
“We will see. So far, we have not received official proposals. He is however appreciated by many clubs. In his position, there are not many players with his characteristics.”
