Chelsea ready to swoop for Man Utd man as agent fumes at contract offer

Angel Gomes Man Utd TEAMtalk

Chelsea are interested in signing Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes after his representatives were left unimpressed by the Red Devils’ latest contract offer, according to reports.

While United tied down fellow youngster Tahith Chong to a new contract earlier this month, Gomes’ future at Old Trafford remains in limbo.

The England Under-20 international is set to enter free agency this month and, as such, reports have claimed that the 19-year-old is attracting interest from across Europe.

According to Metro, that uncertainty has mounted after United’s offer of a contract worth £25,000 per week left Gomes’ representatives “unimpressed”.

While United reportedly believe the offer is generous given Chong’s 11-year association with the club, the player’s agent and his colleagues are considering other options having concluded that their client is unlikely to sign on.

Metro continues by adding that Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen on swooping for the midfielder and has a number of avenues through which to convince both Chong and his representatives.

The Blues are said to be willing to match United’s offer and the club and to give him a role in the first team.

Indeed, Chong’s agent has reportedly been encouraged by 18-year-old Billy Gilmour’s astonishing rise to prominence under Lampard.

United, meanwhile, have insisted that Chong’s development will be similar to that of Jesse Lingard, who did not break into the United first team until the age of 24.

The Red Devils have also reportedly referenced Mason Greenwood’s electric first season under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 18-year-old has made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals, the most recent of which came in Thursday’s 5-0 Europa League thrashing of LASK.

In any case, Chelsea would reportedly have to pay a compensation fee for Chong given that he is under the age of 24 and progressed through United’s academy.
