Ben Chilwell reckons Chelsea have a striker of genuine top quality in Timo Werner and reckons the German is on a par with two current Premier League greats.
The Germany striker switched to the Blues in a £47.5m move from RB Leipzig over the summer. After initially struggling to get off the mark, ‘Turbo Timo’ now has eight goals in 12 appearances.
Indeed, Werner is now very much looking like a Chelsea great in the making and appears well worth the money paid.
Werner has also shown he’s not afraid to speak out about Chelsea’s shortcomings. The striker was particularly vocal after last month’s 3-3 draw with Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
It’s not just his goals though that have caught the eye.
Werner’s lightning pace can unsettle defences and he’s also had his fair share in creating chances for those around him. Boss Frank Lampard clearly likes what he sees.
However, Lampard is not the only one who is impressed by Werner.
Left-back Chilwell reckons the striker is already up there with the best in the Premier League.
“I’d already say he’s up there with them two [Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy]. He can definitely go on to be absolutely world-class for a long time for the next 10 years or so,” Chilwell told SoccerAM.
“I think when you look at his age and how prolific he is in front of goal, even now his start to Chelsea he’s scored a lot of goals already. Just in front of goal he’s so good.”
Asked why he thinks Werner compares to Kane and Vardy, Chilwell offered a simple explanation.
“He has similar characteristics to both Vards and Harry to be fair,” Chilwell added. “In terms of running the channels and how quick he is it’s similar to Vards.
“With Harry his link-up play and is finishing is similar. He’s definitely in a category with them two.”
Door open for Barkley return
Lampard, meanwhile, is considering reintegrating Ross Barkley at Chelsea after his positive start to life on loan at Aston Villa, according to a report.
Barkley had fallen down the pecking order in recent years at Stamford Bridge. He made just 13 starts in the Premier League last season.
With chances of breaking in more regularly slim, Chelsea agreed to let him leave on loan this summer. Aston Villa gave him an opportunity to resurrect his career.
It’s a chance he definitely seems to be taking, as he has made a bright start at Villa Park. He scored on his debut in a stunning 7-2 win over Liverpool, and has since added another goal and assist.
His form has already led to questions of a longer-term future at Villa. Dean Smith says negotiations have not yet begun, but has hailed the impact Barkley has made.
However, Villa may not be able to enjoy his talents beyond this season as this report explains….
