Chelsea postpone talks with high-profile attacker over huge new deal

Chelsea are unlikely to enter contract talks with Tammy Abraham until the end of the season as reports continue to cast doubt on his future.

Abraham was one of the players to benefit from Chelsea’s focus on youth under Frank Lampard last season in the wake of a transfer ban. The England international scored 15 Premier League goals from 34 appearances, 25 of which were starts.

However, his position in the team came under threat when Chelsea became free to act in the transfer market again. They invested heavily in the summer of 2020, putting pressure on their existing players.

One of the most expensive additions was Timo Werner, who represented direct competition for Abraham up front.

Werner hasn’t reached the heights expected of him, but Abraham has still had to settle for a lesser role. It has led to doubts about his future at Stamford Bridge.

For example, West Ham have been linked with the centre-forward as they continue their search for a new man up front. But some pundits think he could aim even higher and is at Manchester United’s level.

Amidst all the speculation, there have been claims that Abraham is not keen on signing a new deal with Chelsea.

His current contract runs until 2023. But while Chelsea continue to be linked with other strikers – such as Erling Haaland – Abraham is hesitant to sign up.

Lampard heaps praise on Abraham

Frank Lampard is full of praise for Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and feels his next challenge is remaining consistent.

He had been expected to commit to a long-term contract last season. However, talks stalled due to a difference between his wage demands and what was on offer.

Now, ESPN have revealed that there is yet more uncertainty about Abraham’s future at club level.

According to their report, Chelsea have put talks with the 23-year-old on hold. Both club and player would rather wait to review their situation – probably until the end of the season.

It is claimed that Abraham wanted a six-figure weekly wage packet as part of a new deal last year. However, Chelsea were reluctant to meet those requests, instead giving him a small increase on his £50,000-per-week terms.

Now, the England international is sidelined with injury. Even when available, he has rarely been used by Thomas Tuchel.

That situation may well change before the end of the season, but neither club nor player want to commit to anything before it does. Hence, his other potential suitors will no doubt be alert to the latest developments.

Abraham sent message by Southgate

Meanwhile, Abraham was left out of the latest England squad due to his lack of action at club level.

Explaining the decision, Gareth Southgate admitted that his performances for Chelsea have not been frequent enough for him to be considered.

“We’re really pleased with Harry (Kane) and (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin and what they’ve done,” Southgate said.

“Tammy Abraham hasn’t really been involved for Chelsea over the last four to six weeks.

“And both Ollie (Watkins) and Patrick (Bamford, who was also left out) in particular, their goals record has been good.”
