Chelsea ‘reach agreement’ to make Bayern star first signing for Tuchel

Thomas Muller, Jerome Boateng

Chelsea are reported to have reached an agreement with the agent of Jerome Boateng to bring the Bayern Munich defender to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The Blues are upwardly mobile in the Premier League since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard in the hotseat. Sunday’s win at Sheffield United was their third in a row – and has them dreaming of securing a top-four finish again.

Tuchel knows, however, that his Chelsea side need work to get back to being title contenders. In fact, finding the right blend in defence will be key to their prospects going forwards.

Indeed, according to Todofijaches, Chelsea have taken the first step towards strengthening their rearguard next season. The Spanish outlet claims the Blues have reached an agreement in principle for Boateng to move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The 32-year-old defender will be a free agent this summer and looks destined to leave Bayern. While all the attention has focused on his teammate, David Alaba, Boateng has, somewhat, slipped under the radar.

According to Todofijaches, Chelsea have been working on the deal for some time and since Lampard’s time in charge. These talks have since progressed and it’s claimed they have now reached an agreement over a deal for Boateng to move to Stamford Bridge.

They state that if nothing goes wrong, Boateng will arrive at Chelsea this summer and become the first signing of the Tuchel era.

Tuchel: We'll give our all for top four

Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea will 'give everything' to finish in the top four of the Premier League after closing the gap to one point with a win at Sheffield United on Sunday night.

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic admitted earlier this season Boateng will likely leave this summer.

“We all know Jerome has a contract until June 30, 2021. We will talk to Jerome and his management at a reasonable time. We’ll come to a fair decision for everyone,” Salihamidzic told Sky Germany. “This is not an issue for us at the moment.”

Bayern step up Upamecano chase

With Bayern set to lose both Boateng and Alaba on free transfers, their need to strengthen in defence is even greater.

As such, they remain the most likely candidates to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

The powerful French defender has emerged as one of the world’s outstanding centre-halves.

Dayot Upamecano

Given his performances in the Bundesliga and the Champions League, it’s little surprise to see strong interest in Upamecano.

Indeed, Upamecano has been strongly linked with Manchester United and Liverpool.

However, Bayern too have always been lurking and last month they confirmed their wish to sign the 22-year-old.

In fact, Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made their transfer stance perfectly clear.

“We will of course deal with it, not only with this player, but in principle with all the positions where we want and need to do something,” he said.

Asked about a potential transfer agreement, Rummenigge was given little away.

“It’s too early for something like that,” he added. “He’s still a Leipzig player at least until the end of the season. But it’s common knowledge that he has a clause in his contract.”
