Complications have arisen in the final stage of negotiations between Chelsea and Rennes for goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, TEAMtalk understands.
Chelsea had hoped to confirm the signing of Mendy in the first half of this week. However, TEAMtalk has learned that a delay has caused the deal to stall.
TEAMtalk understands that Chelsea agreed the fee for the Senegalese star’s move last week. What’s more, personal terms also in place for the 28-year-old.
However, hopes that Mendy would sign in time for Chelsea’s clash against Liverpool may be fading, with Rennes still haggling over the fine details of the transfer.
Specifically, previous suggestions were that Rennes were keen to get a Chelsea player on loan as part of the transfer. Now, it has emerged that Fikayo Tomori is the player in question.
TOMORI CAUSING COMPLICATIONS FOR CHELSEA
Tomori is available for transfer as Chelsea look to move on some of their fringe players. The Blues are looking to balance their books after after an extravagant summer of spending that has topped £200million.
Chelsea officials feel they will be able to confirm Mendy’s arrival imminently with the bulk of the deal agreed.
What’s more, they were hoping to collect a sizeable fee for Tomori, after he made 15 Premier League appearances under boss Frank Lampard last season.
Everton have been strongly linked with a move, but the Englishman is believed to be reluctant to move on as he is convinced he can fight for his place in the Blues first team.
MENDY TARGETED TO PROVIDE COMPETITION
Chelsea technical director and former Blues No.1 Petr Cech played a key role in recommending Mendy as a top target.
Boss Frank Lampard is keen to bring in competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was in the firing line after Leandro Trossard’s equaliser for Brighton on Monday.
