Chelsea squad left perplexed by Sarri’s handling of influential figure
Members of the Chelsea squad are baffled by Maurizio Sarri’s treatment of Gary Cahill and want him back in the fold, a report claims.
The Blues looked set to let the England centre-back depart in January, with Cahill making only seven appearances so far this season.
It was claimed during the transfer window that Chelsea and Fulham had agreed a deal permanent deal for Cahill, but the 33-year-old was unable to agree personal terms with Claudio Ranieri’s side.
Former England international Cahill apparently also turned down potential moves to Serie A giants Juventus and Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.
Cahill’s contract with the Blues is due to expire at the end of the season, and there appears to be little chance of a renewal.
Boss Maurizio Sarri seems to have largely frozen him out, with the 33-year-old club captain having not made a matchday squad since Boxing Day.
According to a report from The Sun, a team meeting was called at the club’s Cobham HQ following their 6-0 defeat at Man City to discuss all issues within the squad.
One of the problems that was apparently highlighted was a lack of leadership, with some squad members ‘stunned’ at Cahill’s exclusion.
He has had a glittering career at Stamford Bridge, with two Premier League titles, the Champions League and the Europa League all on his CV during a seven-year spell at Chelsea.
