Edouard Mendy Rennes

Edouard Mendy will join Chelsea “imminently” for a reported fee of around £20m, according to Sky Sports.

Frank Lampard has already strengthened his side extensively with Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr and Mendy will soon be added to that list.

Lampard has been searching for a new goalkeeper and Andre Onana and Jan Oblak have been mentioned, but the Blues appear to have plumped for Rennes goalkeeper Mendy.

The 28-year-old has already passed a medical and the club are on the verge of announcing the deal.

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol said the player was at club’s stadium on Monday afternoon.

“Edouard Mendy was in actual fact at Stamford Bridge this afternoon having his picture taken and being shown around the stadium,” he said.

“He had completed his medical so I think we are getting to the stage where it will be announced imminently by Chelsea that they’ve signed Edouard Mendy.”

Mendy could be in contention for a debut against Liverpool with the jury still out on Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The Spaniard was dropped for the final game of last season as well as the FA Cup final against Arsenal. While he was beaten from long range on Monday, as Brighton’s Leandro Trossard crashed a shot across him and into the far corner from 22 yards.

Giroud exchange rejected

Lampard backed Kepa though on Monday and when quizzed on the talk Chelsea could soon be signing a new goalkeeper, he said: “I am happy with Kepa, I saw confidence in him, he is here, he is our keeper and I am happy with him.”

According to the Daily Mail, Rennes tried to get Olivier Giroud included as part of the deal, but Chelsea want to keep the Frenchman.

Meanwhile, RMC reporter Mohamed Bouhafsi doubts whether the deal is that far advanced. He claims the player has agreed a five-year deal, but is still waiting to get the green light to fly to London.
