Chelsea have entered the frame in the much-anticipated quest to prise England superstar Jadon Sancho away from Borussia Dortmund, an action that will ensure the winger’s asking price receives a hefty bump.
Frank Lampard’s side are currently unable to sign new players owing to their transfer ban, but are set to find out if their appeal against the ruling has been successful in January.
The Blues have lookes a revitalised side this term under the club legend, with a number of academy graduates rising to the occasion in all areas of the pitch.
With one of ageing duo Willian and Pedro still preferred in one of the wide forward positions most weeks, a move for Sancho could be seen as a long term successor to the veteran pair who are both out of contract in the summer.
The 19-year-old has sparkled on the pitch but has endured a difficult time off it this campaign with a number of disciplinary issues cited, but that has not stopped a host of the Premier League’s biggest hitters from registering interest.
Liverpool have been noted as a key admirer, though manager Jurgen Klopp recently revealed one key reason why a move for Sancho may be difficult to pull off.
The winger’s age and profile would fit perfectly into Ed Woodward and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s transfer plans at Old Trafford, but with Manchester United struggling in 10th position with the prospect of Champions League football next term diminishing by the week, the door may be open for Chelsea to swoop in.
Now, a report from Goal.com has confirmed the London club’s interest, stating that Chelsea are “ready to break their transfer record” in the pursuit of Sancho, with the club-record £72m payed for goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga widely predicted would have to be smashed to sign the player.
The report continues: “[Sancho] enjoys a close relationship with a number of Chelsea players, including England team-mates Tammy Abraham and Callum Hudson-Odoi, and hails from London.”
