Chelsea make enquiry for cheaper alternative to Ben Chilwell

Chelsea have made an approach to Bayern Munich for left-back David Alaba, according to a report.

The Athletic suggest that Lampard has a contingency plan in case he is dashed in his attempts to lure Ben Chilwell away from Leicester.

The England defender is Lampard’s top target, but Leicester City want a fee in excess of £70million and if that proves out of reach then Lampard will look elsewhere.

The source claim Chelsea have approached Bayern to enquire about the availability of Alaba, who is thought to be a player the German champions will be happy to offload.

Bayern are pondering whether to sell Alaba rather than seeing him run down his contract in Bavaria.

The Austria international has excelled during his 10-year stay at the Allianz Arena, but is current deal expires in 2021 and there has been no breakthrough in contract talks.

Negotiations between the parties have been ongoing for 12 months, but the 27-year-old appears no closer to extending his contract.

Don Balon claimed in April that Alaba was available for a cut-price fee of around €50million and that both Liverpool and Manchester United could be set to enter the running for his signature.

Earlier this month the Daily Telegraph reinforced the idea that Bayern will sell Alaba so they will not lose him for free in 12 months’ times.

Paris St-Germain are understood to be interested in the versatile Alaba, who can play at left-back, centre-back or in midfield.

His versatility will make him an attractive proposition to Premier League clubs looking for a bargain post Covid-19.
