Chelsea waiting for star defender to make contract decision

Thiago Silva Chelsea

Chelsea are set to receive a decision from Thiago Silva over his contract status in the coming days or weeks, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 36-year-old joined the Blues on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. The initial deal was a one-year contract.

But the club have the option to extend it for a further year, which they are choosing to exercise. It’s clear to see why, with the Brazilian producing the sort of performances that have established him as one of the world’s best centre-backs.

Before picking up a thigh injury in last month’s win at Tottenham, he was a regular in the Chelsea backline, making 21 appearances in all competitions.

Silva is yet to give his verdict on a new contract, but transfer expert Romano has reported on Twitter that his final decision will be made soon.

The Italian journalist previously stated that the extension would be on the same terms as his current contract.

The defender impressed Chelsea fans off the pitch too during their Champions League round of 16 second leg match against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

Thomas Tuchel backs Thiago Silva

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel says he understands Thiago Silva's feeling that success is only judged on Champions League progress.

He cut an animated figure throughout the game as he watched on from the stands, and celebrated wildly with teammates Mason Mount and Jorginho after Emerson’s late goal secured their progression in the competition.

He seems to have warmed to life in west London, and so has his wife Belle. She recently said on Instagram: “Chelsea are the best club in the world, I love them. We will be champions next year.”

Rudiger delays contract talks

Meanwhile, fellow Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger is ready to defy the club’s bid to open talks over a new deal – by delaying negotiations over his future until a time that suits him.

The Germany defender had fallen down the pecking order under Frank Lampard and appeared destined to leave.

That has led to continuing speculation that a move across London to Tottenham was on the cards. Indeed, our exclusive revealed how Rudiger skipped a game back in September in order to push through the move.

However, Rudiger has emerged from the shadows to become a key figure under his compatriot.
