Wilder reveals his excitement after Sheff Utd splash out for Berge

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has said that the club are “delighted” to have confirmed the signing of Genk midfielder Sander Berge.

The Blades announced the capture of Belgian international Berge on Thursday afternoon for a club-record fee topping the £20m paid to Swansea for Oli McBurnie last summer.

Berge, 21, already has 20 international caps and has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Bramall Lane.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Wilder said: “The board have really backed us in this window to bring in players of the quality of Sander.

“He fits the bill in so many ways. He’s a Norwegian international who has played 20 times for his country, he’s also played Champions League football and we’re delighted he has decided to come to Bramall Lane.

“Sander is someone we have known about for quite a while now. We have tracked him over a sustained period of time, he was a player we highlighted as someone who could come in and really improve us and we are thrilled he’s agreed to come here.

“When we sat down with Sander it was clear that he was really excited about coming here and that was great to see.

“I think this signing just shows how far we have come in a short space of time, that we are now attracting the likes of Sander to the football club. It’s a brilliant signing for us.”

Berge impressed for Genk in the Champions League, despite the Belgian outfit finishing bottom of Group E.

Berge is the second Genk player to make a move to the Premier League this month, following Aston Villa’s capture of striker Mbwana Samatta.

Wilder has revealed that United want three deals over the line before Friday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

The manager said: “We wanted to strengthen while we were going well. It is important you strengthen while you are going well and we want to push on and add to the group.

“We are looking to get three over the line, and we are confident we can do that.”
