Christian Eriksen latest: Transfer preference emerges for playmaker amid Man Utd, Tottenham tussle

Christian Eriksen is reportedly keen to remain in the Premier League next season, rather than move abroad, as Manchester United and Tottenham continue to be linked with a move for the playmaker.

The Denmark legend is currently away on his summer holiday and is in no rush to sort his future, despite three contract offers reportedly being on the table from United, Spurs and Brentford.

The 30-year-old made a remarkable return to form with the Bees last season after fully recovering from the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020.

Eriksen only joined Thomas Frank’s men on a short-term deal in January. However, during that time he notched one goal and four assists as Brentford comfortably secured their Premier League place for the upcoming campaign.

The attacking midfielder will be available on a free transfer from July 1 and has no shortage of takers. Indeed, outside of the trio from England, a number of foreign clubs are also looking at the great Dane.

However, the Daily Mail states that Eriksen’s preference is very much to remain in the Premier League.

And speaking after Denmark’s Nations League win over Austria on Monday, he told Bold.dk: “There are many criteria and many different things inside such a decision.

“Sometimes it goes fast in football, other times a little slower. You are not in control of it yourself. I have to make the best decision and not rush anything through.

“My phone stays on. But I also know my agent well enough to know that he only calls if there’s something exciting.”

Champions League the lure but not essential for Eriksen

Brentford’s current offer will make Eriksen the highest-paid player at the club. However, the lure of Champions League football and a return to Spurs may be too good to turn down.

And Eriksen recently admitted as much, telling Viaplay: “I have different offers and options, which we are considering, and then we make a decision. I would love to play Champions League football again. I know how much fun it is, but it isn’t essential for me.”

That last line will be the one that Frank and new United boss Erik ten Hag will be clinging to.

Indeed, a switch to Old Trafford appears to make the most sense – with Ten Hag prioritising midfield signings.

The Red Devils will lose Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard at the end of June.

Ten Hag is currently prioritising a move for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. However, negotiations are proving difficult and Eriksen can walk straight in for nothing.
