Former Liverpool target has no regrets after snubbing Anfield contract

Fiorentina Under-19 winger Christian Koffi has said that he has not been mistaken after deciding to snub a contract at Liverpool.

The 19-year-old, who began his career in Monaco’s youth ranks, moved to Italy on a free transfer in the summer of 2018 after the expiration of his contract in France.

However, his decision to do so came only after the Frenchman was also presented with an exciting contract proposal by Liverpool, who held talks with the player and his representatives.

Speaking to SoFoot (via Sport Witness), Koffi insisted that he made the right decision after initially being sceptical about a move to Italy.

“There are lots of things that come into play,” the attacker said. “But when I was presented with the two contracts and the two sporting aspects, the choice of Fio was the best.

“Italy was really a championship where I didn’t want to go initially, because it was a little bit contrary to my football.

“But after talking about it with my family, I realised that Italy was going to bring me a lot. And I was not mistaken.”

Koffi scored three goals and assisted five others in his first season with Fiorentina and came closest to making his Serie A debut with an appearance on the bench in May last year.

This term, he has remained solely in the Italian Under-19 division, netting five times and laying on four other goals.

Liverpool, meanwhile, moved on from being snubbed by Koffi and instead bolstered their youth ranks last summer with the signings of Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg.

Former Fulham winger Elliott has made seven senior appearances for the Reds this term, including a minute of action in the Premier League against Sheffield United in January.

Van den Berg, like Elliott, has also been involved in EFL Cup and FA Cup action under Jurgen Klopp and former Under-23s coach Neil Critchley.

In other news, the agent of Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu has declared that Liverpool are the only side capable of buying his client in the upcoming transfer window.
