Monaco’s vice-president has confirmed that the Ligue 1 side are only a step away from completing the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Chelsea.
Bakayoko has not featured under Frank Lampard after spending last season on loan at AC Milan, and it had been thought that the Serie A side were interested in taking him back.
However, a return to a different club has always seemed the more likely scenario for Bakayoko this summer, with multiple reports linking him with a move back to Monaco – who are in need of reinforcements after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.
The French midfielder previously spent three seasons at Monaco, culminating in winning the Ligue 1 title in 2016-17, his final season there.
Now, it looks as if he is likely to return, with Monaco vice-president Oleg Petrov saying at a press conference, via L’Equipe, that only “administrative procedures” were holding up the transfer.
Asked if Bakayoko was the defensive midfielder they expected to sign before their next game against Strasbourg, Petrov replied: “Yes, it’s very possible. He’s a physically strong defensive midfielder and has the attributes for the French league. We know, he knows Monaco and its manager.”
Bakayoko is expected to move to Monaco on a season-long loan, rather than a permanent deal.
