Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United TEAMtalk

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s future hangs in the balance after the failure to get a total of four new deals over the line in January, according to reports.

Having impressed with a brilliant set of results in his early months as interim United boss, Solskjaer has been unable to continue such form into this season.

The Red Devils recorded their worst record in 30 years of league points after 24 games this term and despite reports insisting that Solskjaer has the backing of his seniors, business into the club is seen as a key factor in the Norwegian responding to his critics.

Three new faces arrived in the summer but they have largely failed to light up, with Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo joining in January.

According to the Daily Star Sunday, however, Solskjaer wanted two more signings last month and executive-vice chairman Ed Woodward‘s failure to get them over the line has put the manager on the brink.

While the specific players Solskjaer wanted in addition to a striker and Fernandes are not named, the newspaper claims that the likes of James Maddison and Jack Grealish were on the manager’s radar.

It is added that despite such players looking unlikely to leave midway through the campaign, Woodward’s failure represents a lack of faith in Solskjaer regardless of the difficulty in achieving the deals.

Furthermore, Solskjaer’s sole objective after the failures in January is to guide United to a top-six finish in the Premier League or he could face the axe.

Indeed, a report from Italian outlet SportMediaset says that former Juventus boss Max Allegri is waiting in the wings should Solskjaer be sacked.

Allegri has not been in management since he left Juve at the end of last season but the source claims that he is “fascinated” by the prospect of working abroad.

The Italian’s CV includes six Serie A titles with AC Milan and Juve, who he also took to the Champions League final in 2015 and 2017.

In other news, United are reportedly considering reigniting their interest in Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier.

The Red Devils were keen on the England international under Jose Mourinho, who has now restricted Dier’s game time at Spurs.

Reports claim that United are tempted by Dier’s versatility, given that he can slot in at centre-back.
