Coady in hilarious response to Carragher over Van Dijk replacement gag

Conor Coady proved to Jamie Carragher that he is nobody’s fool when the Sky Sports pundit cracked a joke about Jurgen Klopp wanting to sign the Wolves defender.

Liverpool are in the market to sign a new defender in January after Virgil van Dijk was sidelined for several months.

The Holland star looks set to miss most of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Everton.

Jordan Pickford’s reckless challenge forced the defender off the pitch and he will now undergo knee surgery.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher urged the Reds to target a January deal for a powerful France defender.

However, after helping Wolves to a dogged 1-0 win at Leeds, Carragher could not resist the urge to play a trick on the Wolves man.

Coady was imperious in the Wolves defence as they ground out the win at Elland Road.

And after the game, Carragher joked that Klopp had earlier stated he wanted to re-sign the recent England cap in January.

He said to Coady from the Sky Sports studio: “You won’t be aware but Jurgen Klopp tonight has done his Champions League press conference ahead of the game with Ajax.

“He’s actually mentioned you and two other players who he thinks could actually be replacements for Virgil van Dijk. Would that come into your thinking?”

Coady refused to fall for the joke and commented: “I can’t believe you’ve just put this on me here, no!

“I can’t believe it. Not at all, I love playing for this football club every single day.

“We’ve just beat Leeds in an amazing, amazing game.”

Carragher then added: “You must be honoured though, with Klopp saying that?”

Coady: “Listen, you know what I’m like mate!”

Presenter Dave Jones then interrupted, saying: “Conor, don’t believe a word he is saying. Don’t get dragged into that honestly!”

Coady signed a new five-year contract with Wolves earlier this year and has made it clear he intends to stay at Molineux.

Carragher compares Coady to Van Dijk

It’s not the first time Carragher has spoken of Coady in the same breath as Van Dijk.

Liverpool let Coady leave Anfield in 2014 when he moved to Huddersfield in a deal worth just £500,000, before he joined Wolves a year later for a bargain £2million.

Speaking back in April, Carragher told Sky Sports: “Conor Coady has also done brilliantly for Wolves; he has not missed a minute this season. He is probably as good as anyone alongside Van Dijk in terms of passing from the back.”
