Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he almost signed for Arsenal in 2003, before snubbing the Gunners to move to Manchester United.

The then-Sporting attacker eventually signed for United after the Old Trafford outfit, who played their Portuguese opponents in a pre-season contest, were impressed by Ronaldo and pushed through negotiations to sign him.

Speaking to TVI, Ronaldo also opened up about his negotiations with former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger over a proposed move to Highbury.

“There had been contacts with so many other teams, Valencia for example were one of them,” the 34-year-old said. “I met with Arsene Wenger and was about to go to Arsenal.

“I talked to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter too but after the friendly against Manchester United, who were already interested, they became even more interested and they sped up negotiations and signed me.”

Ronaldo has recently spoken out about one of United’s summer targets, saying he is baffled as to why the player has not moved away from his current club.
