Pundits tear Tottenham to shreds and suggest Harry Kane will leave after ‘shameful’ exit

Harry Kane, Tottenham beaten in Zagreb

Glenn Hoddle and Peter Crouch ripped into Tottenham for a “lack of desire” in their Europa League exit – and feel the defeat could lead to the departure of star man Harry Kane.

Leading 2-0 from the first leg against Dinamo Zagreb, Tottenham looked a safe bet to progress through.

However, a stunning hat-trick from Mislav Orsic booked Zagreb’s place in the quarter-finals and ensured one of the worst nights in Tottenham’s recent history.

Mourinho gave a brutally honest assessment after the game and admitted his players had been second best.

However, there was absolutely no holding back from BT Sport pundits Crouch and Hoddle, who ripped their old sides to shreds.

“Too many have had an off day. There is no desire, no leadership,” Hoddle bemoaned. “There was nothing from Tottenham – they all left it to one another. It was shameful.

“They have to look at themselves. There was no desire and they were just nervous. They lost the plot, but they lost their heart too. Sometimes in games like this, you need to make their own luck – a rollicking here and there – but they did not do that. There was no heart and they did not put any effort in.

“To get beat 3-0 against a very average team – Orsic was unbelievable tonight by the way – but they’ve done by a very average side. They will know that on the plane home.”

Crouch, meanwhile, questioned whether even a League Cup win would be enough to save Mourinho. He claimed that even winning at Wembley would be papering over the cracks. He also feels that the side have “gone backwards” under the Portuguese.

“They have a League Cup final now, but even if they win it, are Spurs fans going to happy with that?” Crouch questioned. “It’s another nothing season where they have gone backwards.

“They looked like they just went there expecting to go through. But they started badly and Zagreb grew into it. They got what they deserved.

Crouch says Kane at career crossroads

Asked if Mourinho will be sacked, Crouch said the more peritent question should be over captain and talisman Kane.

“The last two games, tonight and the derby [defeat to Arsenal], their season is hanging by a thread.

“Look at Harry Kane. He’s a Champions League player – he shouldn’t even be in this competition. [Kylian] Mbappe, [Erling] Haaland, [Lionel] Messi, [Robert] Lewandowski – he’s on their level. Look at him now, trudging off with his held bowed. Never mind Mouirnho, he [Kane] is at a real career crossroads now. He should be playing at the very top.”

Asked again about Mourinho, Crouch suggested all hope was not lost for Mourinho.

“He’s been brought in to win a trophy, but if he does it, it’s job done in a sense, given their wait. It could be a stepping stone. But they’re miles away from that and a top-four finish and questions will be asked first.”
