Under-fire Levy buoyed with key Tottenham man on brink of new deal

Son Heung-min is reportedly close to agreeing a new contract with Tottenham, despite the continued uncertainty over striker partner Harry Kane’s future with the club.

The South Korean forward has enjoyed a superb season, despite his club’s troubles, scoring 15 goals and adding nine assists in 33 Premier League appearances. And while Kane ponders his own long-term future in north London, the Daily Star reports that Son is in the final stages of extending his current deal – which runs out in 2023.

The former Bayer Leverkusen frontman is expected to pen to paper on a deal that has been on the table since September.

Son committing his future to the club is a rare piece of good news for Spurs. The club has gone through a diffiicult period over the last fortnight.

Daniel Levy axed boss Jose Mourinho and was then involved in the failed European Super League. A nightmare spell ended with a poor display in a 1-0 loss to Man City in the Carabao Cup final.

After facing calls to quit the club in the wake of the ESL scandal, Levy will be hoping Son’s new deal takes some pressure off his shoulders.

Prior to talk of the new contract there had been rumours of Son moving on this summer.

Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were both rumoured to have had an interest. However, it now looks like the 28-year-old will be extending his stay in England for some years to come.

Kane’s situation is a different one, given that he has spent his whole career at Spurs and is desperate for silverware.

Prior to the Wembley cup final defeat, the England skipper was already making noises about leaving.

The 27-year-old just has Champions League and Carabao Cup runners-up medals to show for his time with the club.

His current contract does not run out until 2024. But if a huge offer comes in then Levy will have a major decision to make over his star man’s future.

Busy summer ahead for Tottenham

The Spurs chairman also has the small matter of appointing a new manager.

Ryan Mason was handed an interim role until the end of the season. However, Levy wants a more experienced man in charge from the summer.

Julian Nagelsmann was the frontrunner before he decided to join Bayern Munich. Leicester chief Brendan Rodgers has also ruled himself out of the running.

The new favourite appears to be Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, with talks reportedly scheduled to take place soon.

This summer looks like it could be one of the busiest in Tottenham’s history. A new manager is set to arrive, while Kane’s future will be top of the agenda.

But for now, Spurs still have a slim hope of qualifying for the Champions League via the Premier League.

They take on Sheffield United on Sunday night and currently sit five points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
