Upamecano alerts Liverpool with exciting verdict on goal-hungry Werner

RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano has warned that teammate Timo Werner is hungry to add to his mammoth goal tally before the season is finished.

Werner has become one of Europe’s most sought-after attackers this season, having netted 27 goals and assisted 11 others ahead of Sunday’s clash with Bayer Leverkusen.

Such form has seen the 23-year-old heavily linked with Liverpool, with the player himself revealing his admiration for the club and boss Jurgen Klopp.

In response, Klopp was cagey when asked about the chances of Werner moving to Anfield.

Speaking to Fussball Transfers, centre-back Upamecano revealed that Werner is hungry for more goals this season and outlined his importance to Julian Nagelsmann’s side.

“He is very talented, but he is also not finished yet. I think it will increase further,” Upamecano said.

“He’s a real killer in front of the gate. I am sure that he will score many more goals. We need him.”

Leipzig face Wolfsburg after Sunday’s clash with Leverkusen before meeting Tottenham in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Werner gave Leipzig a one-goal advantage from the penalty spot in North London in the first leg and Upamecano warned his side to expect a tough test in the return match.

“We had a really good game there. We can say that we are leading at half time, but now we have to pass the second half,” the defender said.

“Under no circumstances should we underestimate them. You have a good coach and were in the final last year. So this is not a small team.

“It is true that we had a good day in the first leg. Now I hope that we will do the same in the second leg and win at home with our fans in the back.”

In other news, Liverpool reportedly expect Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri to leave the club this summer.

Lallana is out of contract at the end of the season while Shaqiri has struggled for game time through injury.

The same report also claims that Klopp has a ready-made replacement in mind.
