Deadline Day Paper Talk: Arsenal eye Barca coup; shock Newcastle swoop

Date published: Thursday 8th August 2019 7:45

Arsenal are eyeing a loan deal for a Barcelona star, while Newcastle are being tipped to sign a former Tottenham and QPR centre-back – according to Thursday’s Deadline Day papers.

Arsenal are reportedly ready to turn their attentions to Barcelona centre-back Samuel Umtiti.

The Gunners are in the market for a new centre-back before Thursday’s transfer deadline, following Laurent Koscielny’s departure to Bordeaux.

A move for Juventus’ Daniele Rugani fell through after the two clubs failed to come to an agreement over a fee.

Unai Emery was also after RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano, but the Bundesliga side wanted a whopping £92million for his signature.

However, Umtiti remains an option – although Arsenal will be restricted to just a loan deal for the Frenchman, according to a report in The Sun.

Injuries and a loss of form restricted Umtiti, who had been linked with Manchester United before they signed Harry Maguire, to just 14 La Liga appearances last season and he has fallen down the pecking order at the Nou Camp.
