Manchester United are considering a summer swoop for €50m-rated AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, according to reports.
Spain international David de Gea currently has a firm grip on the spot between the sticks for United and the 29-year-old recently put an end to speculation over his future by signing a new deal at Old Trafford.
Behind De Gea, Sergio Romero, 32, is the club’s second-choice stopper but according to Italian source Calciomercato, United want to freshen up the position and have Donnarrumma on their radar.
Despite only being 20, the Italian – who progressed through the ranks at Milan – has been a regular in the side for over four seasons and has racked up 188 appearances for the club so far.
Such an addition would fit into United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s desired remit of signing young, hungry talent with excellent potential.
Calciomercato adds that Chelsea are also interested given that Kepa Arrizabalaga has struggled this season, while La Gazzetta dello Sport says that Milan’s asking price will start at €5omillion.
United moving for Donnarumma would add a fresh twist to Dean Henderson’s future at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old Sheffield United loanee is close to an England call-up after excelling with the Blades in the past two seasons and he has previously spoken of his long-term aim of ousting De Gea in the United goal.
However, Donnarumma’s arrival would mean Henderson would likely leave and TEAMtalk understands that United would only be willing to sell the stopper if the move was to the Blades on a permanent deal.
Donnarumma, meanwhile, has kept eight clean sheets in 22 Serie A outings this season.
Milan sit 10th in the Italian top flight ahead of Monday’s clash with Torino.
In other news, United are reportedly interested in reigniting their interest in Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier.
United were keen on Dier when Jose Mourinho was at the helm and the England international has struggled for game time under the Portuguese manager this term.
