Defender unsure of Chelsea future despite ‘huge season’ with Sheff Utd

Ethan Ampadu insists he has learnt a lot from his spell with Sheffield United and will discuss his Chelsea future in the summer months.

Ampadu, 20, penned a season-long loan deal with the Blades last September. While it has been a disastrous campaign for the Bramall Lane outfit, Ampadu has prospered personally. The Wales international has enjoyed 21 starts among 23 Premier League appearances. He has played 27 times in all competitions, enjoying his first spell of regular first-team action.

And, despite the upheaval of Chris Wilder leaving and impending relegation, Ampadu sees the positives.

“It’s been a huge season for me, the biggest I have had as a footballer,” he said. “I will take everything away from it that I can.

“Whether that’s learning and adapting to the Premier League, watching games back on myself and seeing what I can improve on, which I do regularly anyway, off the pitch stuff, mentally, how to look after myself.

“How to be a professional footballer in the Premier League is what I will take away from this spell.”

The defender joined Chelsea from Exeter City in the summer of 2017. Despite limited senior appearances, the youngster signed a five-year deal in September 2018.

He featured mainly for the Blues Under-23 side that season, with only a handful of first-team outings. Then Stamford Bridge chief Frank Lampard decided to loan him to German club RB Leipzig for 2019-2020.

A look ahead to the Premier League game between Crystal Palace and Chelsea, including stats on form, possession, shots, cards, corners, top scorers and previous meetings.

But it turned out to be a disaster, with only seven appearances in all competitions. The Exeter-born starlet was hampered by a back injury that kept him sidelined for six months.

He returned to west London but was then jettisoned to South Yorkshire.

Ampadu unclear of Tuchel intentions

Breaking into the Chelsea side at such a young age was always going to be tough. It seems as though the Welshman has been around for some time but he only turned 20 last September.

It remains to be seen what happenings in the summer, with another loan move a possibility. But the talented stopper is happy to keep doing what he does best to see where it takes him.

“My thoughts right now is just seeing how the season goes here. For now we have a big eight games left. My mind is just on that,” he added.

“I haven’t really spoken to him (Tuchel). I have spoken to Chelsea a little bit here and there just to see how the season’s going, nothing for in the future. They have their season to finish off and we have ours.

“Those sorts of questions will be answered at the end of the season, but for now we have a lot going on and I haven’t been thinking about next season too much.”
