Derby County manager Phillip Cocu has praised the development of former Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom following the defender’s impressive 2019/20 season.

The versatile defender initially spent the start of the season on the sidelines following a knee injury he sustained towards the end of last season, but has continued to impress since coming back into the first-team fold in November.

The former England U21 international, who is currently experiencing his second spell at Pride Park following his initial loan from Liverpool during the 2013/14 season, was an ever-present for the club and featured in the 1-0 play-off final defeat to Queens Park Rangers at Wembley Stadium.

Wisdom, who has also operated at centre back this season, has featured in the last 10 consecutive matches for Cocu’s side, as they aim to narrow the gap between themselves and sixth-placed Preston North End for a play-off place.

The 26-year-old captained the Rams for the first time last-time out in the absence of skipper Wayne Rooney, leading his side to a 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Pride Park Stadium.

In an interview with Rams TV, Cocu was full of praise for the defender: “For Andre, it was the first time being captain [against Blackburn] and I think he has developed himself in a very positive way through the season..

“He sees the game well, leads the other players and always has contact with team-mates and the back four. He missed the start of the season because of injury and had to be patient.”

Wisdom has racked up 103 appearances for Derby across two spells, with Cocu adding to his appraisal of the powerful defender.

“He understands how we want to play, the intensity we train and play at and he has become an important player for the team.”

He added: “Andre has made some good changes and his development has been positive. He has done it himself.”

With a wealth of experience with former loan clubs Norwich City and Championship counterparts West Bromwich Albion, Wisdom will be hoping to play his part and lead Derby County’s charge for a late promotion push.

The Rams travel to high-flyers Millwall on Saturday in a crucial game at the Den, but Cocu’s side will undoubtedly be full of confidence after their last visit on the road, a 3-1 victory over Garry Monk’s Sheffield Wednesday.
