Derby County boss Wayne Rooney is hoping to seal a loan deal for Manchester United’s young defender Teden Mengi on Monday.
Mengi, 18, has been with the United youth set-up for the past two years. He made 15 Premier League 2 appearances last season and has turned out seven times in 2020-2021.
The Manchester-born starlet made his senior debut as a substitute in a Europa League match against LASK in August 2020. He is rated highly by Old Trafford chiefs and looks set for a stellar career.
Gaining game time will be essential to his development and that looks set to come with Derby. Former Red Devil Rooney has been eager to bolster his squad since taking the reins on a permanent basis.
Derby are losing Morgan Whittaker to Swansea, while George Evans is off to Millwall and youngster Kaide Gordon is joining Liverpool. The former England captain has used his United connections to get a deal over the line on deadline day.
Mengi, who has been training regularly with United’s first team squad, is expected to have a medical on Monday. United chief Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sanctioned the move and feels it will benefit all parties concerned.
It remains to be seen how much action Mengi gets at Pride Park Stadium. He will join a Derby side sitting 18th in the Championship standings.
They are just five points above the relegation zone. However, three successive wins see the Rams moving in the right direction under Rooney’s guidance.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms Brandon Williams Manchester United stay
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United defender Brandon Williams will stay at the club in this window despite speculation linking him with a move away.
Defender in demand
One man who is certainly creating a stir away from Old Trafford is defender Diogo Dalot. The 21-year-old, on loan with Milan from United, has enjoyed an excellent few months at the San Siro.
He has played eight times in Serie A, with Milan sitting top of the Italian table. The Portugal Under-21 ace also played in all six of the Rossoneri’s Europa League group games.
And the word is that Milan want to make the deal permanent in the summer. SunSport claimed over the weekend that Milan have ‘made early contact’ with United to see about a summer deal.
Dalot penned a five-year deal at the Theatre of Dreams in the summer of 2018. He made 16 Premier League appearances in his first season with United but barely featured in 2019-2020.
The youngster is finally showing his true colours in Italy and may well be set for a lengthy stay.
