Dilemma for Liverpool after winger enquiry goes against Edwards plan

Liverpool have received an enquiry from Swansea City over taking Harry Wilson on loan, according to a report.

Wilson has come through the academy ranks at Liverpool, but has found breaking into the first team tough. He spent last season on loan at Cardiff City, his fifth such spell away from Anfield. At the age of 24, the Wales international has now reached something of a career crossroads.

Liverpool still have the attacking midfielder under contract until 2023, so are not under particular pressure to sell. However, it seems increasingly unlikely that Wilson will be able to force his way into Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

Therefore, now may be the best time for Liverpool to cash in on their academy product. Wilson is coming off the back of a season in which he scored seven goals and added 12 assists in the Championship, so his stock is high.

A recent report claimed they were holding out for a fee of around €15m after receiving a lower offer from Benfica. Wilson has also been suggested as a target for newly promoted Brentford and freshly relegated West Brom.

However, according to the Sunday People (via The Boot Room), Wilson is wanted by Swansea – but only on loan.

Swansea tried to sign him last summer before he went to their rivals Cardiff instead. Now, they are keen to revive their pursuit of the Wrexham-born winger.

Beaten play-off finalists last season, Swansea see Wilson as someone who could help them go at least one better in 2021-22.

Whether Liverpool would be willing to sanction another loan remains to be seen. They would prefer to get Wilson’s wages off the books; he earns £60,000 per week and has never made a Premier League appearance for them.

But if Swansea can put a convincing proposal together, sporting director Michael Edwards could have something to think about in terms of another loan.

Edwards tipped to secure sale

One month ago, pundit Paul Robinson predicted that Liverpool should be able to get their asking price for Wilson this summer.

“I think they will be able to get £15million for Harry Wilson,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s a reasonable price for a very good young player. He had a great season at Cardiff and I think there will be Premier League clubs looking to sign him now.

“Liverpool will have to speculate to accumulate this summer. They need to sell players if they want to bring players in and they need to freshen things up in a couple of positions so it’s important.

“There might even be a better price or a better deal to be done with Wilson.”
