Duo return for Liverpool’s Champions League trip

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has Dejan Lovren and Naby Keita back in his squad to face Red Star Belgrade.

The Reds take on the Serbians on Tuesday in the Champions League and midfielder Keita and defender Lovren have recovered from injury.

Keita has not been involved in the last five games due to a hamstring problem, while Lovren missed the 1-1 draw at Arsenal on Saturday with a minor problem.

Not part of the 21-man squad heading to Serbia are Jordan Henderson and Nathaniel Clyne (illness). Henderson will build up his fitness at Liverpool’s training ground following his recent hamstring issue and is set to be in contention for Sunday’s Premier League home match against Fulham.

“We will take pretty much everyone. Clyney is ill and will not be involved, but Dejan and Naby are back in the travelling squad,” said Klopp.

“Hendo was close, but not close enough. He needs two proper sessions for his fitness, which he will get at Melwood, with Shaqiri and hopefully Clyney if he is back from illness. They both should be fine for the weekend.”

Xherdan Shaqiri will also miss out after Klopp decided to leave the Swiss forward out of the firing line.

Shaqiri started and played for 68 minutes of Liverpool’s 4-0 home win over Red Star on October 24, but despite no visiting fans being allowed inside Anfield, Shaqiri was still jeered by Red Star fans.

The midfielder caused a storm along with Switzerland team-mate Granit Xhaka when they both celebrated goals against Serbia at the World Cup in Russia by making an Albanian nationalist eagle symbol with their hands.

The pair are both of Kosovan-Albanian descent and the incident, for which they were fined 10,000 Swiss francs (nearly £8,000) each, threatened to inflame political tensions. Kosovo is a former Serbian province and Serbia does not recognise its independence.
