Simon Makienok: Hat-trick to stun Bournemouth in EFL Cup

Preston’s stunning extra time win over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium was a headline story on a busy night of EFL Cup action.

Striker Simon Makienok produced a hat-trick as the Championship side beat the Premier League Cherries.

Bournemouth had looked to have win it when Dan Gosling put them two up with 15 minutes get to play, but Dane Makienok pounced to equalise in the dying seconds before producing an extra-time winner.

There was late drama at Elland Road too, where Chris Wood came off the bench to bundle home a winner for Leeds, who beat Championship rivals Blackburn 1-0.

It was an all-Championship affair at St James’ Park too, where Matt Ritchie was among the scorers as Newcastle beat Wolves 2-0 – the reverse scoreline from when the sides met in the league last weekend.

In the other third round tie of the night, Reading overcame the second-half sending off of Tyler Blackett to beat Brighton 2-1 at the Amex Stadium.
