Emery provides telling reaction to Guendouzi’s £60m PSG links

Unai Emery was keen to highlight Matteo Guendouzi’s importance to Arsenal as the Gunners coach reacted to rumours that the midfielder could be sold to PSG.

Guendouzi has been enjoying a fine debut season at the Emirates Stadium, and was given another start in Arsenal’s Europa League win over BATE Borisov on Thursday evening.

Recent reports have suggested that PSG – where Guendouzi played in the academy as a youngster – are readying a £60m bid, which could be enough to force Arsenal to sell as they look to fund other signings.

However, Emery admitted he was shocked by the rumours, confirming that he sees Guendouzi as having a central role in Arsenal‘s long-term future.

“I am surprised,” Emery told reporters. “I don’t want this.

“His development is like we want. He has a big ambition, big quality. Sometimes we need more quality with him and sometimes we need for him to be more stronger in midfield.

“But his development with us is very important and he’s playing with big consistency and I think he is improving a lot. His quality is very impressive for us.”

The 19-year-old midfielder was signed for a fee of around £7m in the summer, and has now made 38 appearances for the club in all competitions.
