Unai Emery thinks his Arsenal side “deserved” to win in their 1-1 draw with Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday.
With Tottenham losing on Saturday and Manchester United held at Huddersfield earlier in the day, a win for Emery’s side would have taken them to within a point of Spurs in fourth.
Instead they head into the the final day three points adrift and with an inferior goal difference to their north London rivals after Brighton toasted their survival with a deserved point.
Everything looked to be going Arsenal’s way when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave them an early lead but Glenn Murray’s second-half equaliser all but killed off their chances of a top-four finish.
“We deserved to win but we know they are defensively very strong and played very well,” Emery told Sky Sports.
“We had our chances to score, the first half was probably the difference in the result. And in the second half after their goal we had chances but they defended very well, congratulations to them for their work.
“We fight and try to win each match in the Premier League but every match is difficult and today is an example of that.
“We wanted to win today and we worked in the Premier League to have the possibility of a top four place, but today we drew and lost the chance. Now we are going to prepare for our match in Valencia.”
