Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has revealed that his situation with Arsenal is still “unclear”, with as many as 10 European teams chasing him.
Patience paid off for Martinez as he impressed during a run of games in the first team towards the end of the season. After Bernd Leno suffered an injury, the backup keeper took his chance.
However, Martinez’s long-term future remains unclear. While he has spent 10 years at Arsenal, he has shown he is capable of being a number one elsewhere.
His future likely depends on what Arsenal decide to do when Leno is available again. Mikel Arteta must decide whether to keep Martinez as first choice, or to give the role back to the German.
If Martinez does not get guarantees over his chances, then it is likely he will call time on his decade at the Emirates Stadium.
The 27-year-old recently admitted he would only stay at Arsenal if they offered him more gametime. That’s because he wants to establish himself as Argentina’s number one.
Now, in an intriguing update, he has revealed that the number of teams interested in him stretches into double figures. However, he is still waiting for a decision from Arsenal.
“I am in the sights of 10 teams in Europe,” he told the Argentine edition of Marca. “But I cannot say who those clubs are, because it is nothing concrete.
“I still do not have the clear situation with Arsenal, when I have it on my return, I will make the best decision for my career.”
Martinez remains under contract at the Emirates Stadium for two more years. He kept five clean sheets in 11 starts after the re-start in 2019-20.
Arsenal want to keep Martinez
Despite Martinez’s demands for more assurances, reports revealed recently that Arsenal want him to stay.
They have been impressed by his performances in the latter part of the season. Therefore, they would not be too eager to sell him.
That would be a blow for teams like Leeds United, who had expressed an interest in him.
