West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen has earned his first England call-up ahead of the Three Lions’ four Nations League matches in June.
The Hammers attacker has enjoyed another fantastic season, scoring 18 goals and assisting 13 others in 51 games. He was subsequently in contention to feature in the March international break until he suffered a foot injury.
Nevertheless, after leading West Ham to the Europa League semi-finals, he has now got his England reward.
Leicester full-back James Justin has also received his first England call-up. The 24-year-old recently returned from a serious knee injury and has impressed under Brendan Rodgers.
Meanwhile, Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier is also back in. He missed the March internationals due to a foot injury. Alongside Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker of Manchester City and Chelsea’s Reece James, there are five full-backs in the squad. Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has dropped out, though.
Another returnee to the squad along Alexander-Arnold is Fikayo Tomori. The AC Milan centre-back helped his side clinch the Serie A title on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is back in following his return from injury. The 26-year-old won England’s 2021 Men’s Player of the Year award for his role at Euro 2020.
However, that means Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson drops out. The rest of the midfield is unchanged. Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and James Ward-Prowse make the cut.
Bowen in, Man Utd duo out
Up front, Bowen‘s arrival comes as Manchester United pair Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho miss out again.
Roma forward Tammy Abraham keeps his place. His 17 Serie A goals this season is the new highest tally in the division by an Englishman.
West Ham offer 3 players big new contracts
West Ham are offering Jarrod Bowen, Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek new contracts but who will sign?
Manchester City trio Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling are all in too after they helped the club scoop a fourth Premier League title in five years on Sunday.
Three Lions captain and Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is in, as is Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka. However, Saka’s Gunners team-mate Emile Smith Rowe drops out.
More players drop out of England squad
Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has also dropped out, as has Kyle Walker-Peters and Tyrick Mitchell.
Goalkeeper duo Fraser Forster and Sam Johnstone have also lost their places. Southgate has instead gone with Everton’s Jordan Pickford – his No. 1 – as well as Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale.
England begin their Nations League campaign against Hungary on Saturday June 4, facing the nation again on Tuesday June 14.
In between, there are repeats of the Euro 2020 last 16 and final matches against Germany and Italy, respectively.
