Arsenal and Spurs are ready to do battle for a midfielder with an £86m clause, while Liverpool could raise their bid for a World Cup defender after seeing an opening offer rejected, according to Wednesday’s European papers.
NORTH LONDON DERBY FOR BARCELONA MIDFIELDER
Arsenal boss Unai Emery has been rocked by the news that north London rivals Tottenham have joined the race for a midfield target.
That is according to TMW, who claim that Emery is keen on adding Spain midfielder Andre Gomes to his squad before the start of the season.
Gomes could reportedly leave the Nou Camp, having struggled for consistent game time since his arrival.
Barcelona paid €35million for Gomes in 2016, and the former Valencia star was tipped to be the long-term replacement for Xavi.
He claimed earlier in the year that he is enduring “hell” at Barca after claims he was failing to justify his price tag.
“Maybe it’s not the correct word but it turned into a bit of a hell, because I started to feel more pressure,” Gomes revealed.
“With pressure I feel fine, but with pressure on myself, I don’t. The feeling that I have during games is bad.”
Gomes has a contract with the Catalan giants until 2021 but is release clause is said to be a whopping £86million.
LIVERPOOL SEE VIDA BID REJECTED
Liverpool have been given encouragement in their efforts to sign Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida, according to reports.
BeIn Sports claim the Reds have matched the €18m offer submitted by Tottenham on Tuesday in an effort to bring the commanding Croatian defender to Anfield this summer.
And although their effort has been knocked back, the source claims the Black Eagles have told Liverpool they will consider an increased offer for a player they signed on a free transfer back in January.
Although Besiktas have declined to mention an asking price for the 29-year-old, it was reported earlier in the week they could sell for a fee of around €35million.
While that might be a little higher than Liverpool are willing to pay, Besiktas will hope rival interest from Everton, West Ham, Fulham, as well as Tottenham, will help drive up the defender’s fee.
