Chelsea could lose a star man in a cut-price move to LaLiga and sign a veteran Brazilian as his replacement, while Arsenal are set to spend €25m to sign a Real Betis defender, according to Wednesday’s European papers.
CHELSEA TO OFFLOAD AZPILICUETA AND SIGN BRAZIL VETERAN
Reports in Spain have gone big on reports that Cesar Azpilicueta will be allowed to leave Chelsea this summer in a cut-price move to LaLiga.
El Gol Digital claims the full-back wants to return to his native Pamplona and will be sold for just €20million – with a switch to Athletic Bilbao in the offing.
The reports draw huge alarm bells for two very obvious reasons.
Firstly, the Spain star has been one of the Blues’ most consistent stars in recent seasons so allowing him to move on, especially for such a reduced fee, would make little sense. A tactician as shrewd as Maurizio Sarri will be fully aware of Azpilicueta’s strengths so allowing a major asset to move on doesn’t appear to add up.
Secondly, you’d imagine if Chelsea did allow the player to move on, there’d be higher-ranking clubs than Bilbao looking to add the former Marseille star to their ranks.
The report also claims incoming Chelsea boss Sarri will replace the departing Azpilicueta with Inter Milan veteran Miranda.
The Brazilian turns 34 in September and bringing him in at this stage of his career would appear unlikely.
Still, stranger things have happened in football, though these reports are unlikely to go down well with Chelsea supporters.
