Manchester United are ready to end their right-back hunt by meeting the €50m fee for a Portugal star, while there’s a new leader in the race to sign Matthijs De Ligt, according to Monday’s European papers.
SEMEDO ASKING PRICE TEMPTS SOLSKJAER
Manchester United are ready to switch their focus towards Nelson Semedo after the right-back was reportedly put up for sale by Barcelona.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in the market for a new right-back this summer and the club have launched an initial £40m offer for Crystal Palace star Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
But Palace’s stance means United will have a hard time prising the 21-year-old away from Selhurst Park and it’s suggested Solskjaer does not want to waste too much time chasing what could prove to be a dead-end with regards Wan-Bissaka.
As such, Marca reckons United will instead turn to Portugal full-back Semedo, who looks set to leave the Nou Camp this summer.
The 25-year-old has failed to command a regular shirt at Barcelona since a move from Benfica in 2017 and looks set to be sold off this summer.
According to Madrid-based paper Marca, Barca want €50m for the player, who has also been linked with Atletico Madrid.
Atletico, however, look far more likely to sign Napoli right-back Elseid Hysaj in a deal looking set to cost €25m plus add-ons.
And that will leave United with a clear run at Semedo, who has made 50 appearances over his two seasons in Spain, and finally solve Solskjaer’s search for a new right-back.
MAN UTD TALK TO AGENT OF ST ETIENNE DEFENDER
Manchester United could be ready to spring a surprise in their hunt for a new central defender this summer after reportedly holding talks with the agent of a talented St Etienne teenager.
William Sailba has enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Ligue 1 side, with the teenager carving out a reputation for himself as one of Europe’s leading next generation of defenders.
With much of the hype – quite justifiably – surrounding Matthijs De Ligt, Saliba has quietly developed without too much focus on his young shoulders – but that hasn’t stopped neither Manchester United or Arsenal making checks on his progress.
Now, and after drawing a blank over efforts to sign a long list of defenders that includes De Ligt, Toby Alderweireld, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Samuel Umtiti, Joachim Andersen et al, reports in France, via Metro, claim United are ready to switch their focus to France U19 prospect Saliba.
And to further the rumours, Sailba’s representative, Djibril Niang, uploaded an Instagram story from Manchester restaurant, Ivy Asia, on Saturday.
Former United manager Jose Mourinho has been impressed by Saliba after the youngster’s meteoric rise in Ligue and said recently: “I think he has everything needed to become a good player, much like Kurt Zouma, who I signed.”
It’s believed St Etienne have slapped a €30m (£26m) asking price on Saliba’s head, with the 18-year-old also being watched by Southampton and Watford at various stages through this season.
