Euro Paper Talk: Arsenal, Liverpool locked in battle for Schalke star

A Real Madrid keeper has no interest in being used as a makeweight in a deal for Thibaut Courtois, while Arsenal have stepped up their pursuit of a Liverpool target, according to Tuesday’s European papers.

Keylor Navas has no intention of being involved as a makeweight in Real Madrid’s possible pursuit of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, according to reports.

The Blues keeper has recently hinted he could move away from Stamford Bridge and he is understood to be on Real Madrid’s radar along with Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea.

However, Spanish publication Don Balon claims Navas will reject any offer if used as bait in a potential deal for the Belgium keeper.

The Costa Rica international has won the Champions League twice while at the Spanish giants and would be likely to lose his place in the side if Courtois joined.

There have been some concerns over his performances this season as Real underperform in La Liga but Don Balon continues by saying that he is unlikely to consider a move to Man United either.

He was close to moving to Old Trafford in 2015 as part of a deal that would’ve seen him swap places with De Gea but the move fell through at the last minute.

Arsenal have made Liverpool target Max Meyer their number one summer priority, according to a report.

Jurgen Klopp is a known admirer of the player, while Arsene Wenger is still looking to strengthen his midfield options despite the recent arrival of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil penning a new deal with the club.

AC Milan are also said to be keen, but a recent report in Bild claims that Meyer has been offered a €5.5million-a-year deal to stay at Schalke.

Calciomercato however claimed that the German international would prefer to play in England, hence why both the Reds and the Gunners have a better chance than AC Milan.

Now, the Daily Star are reporting that Arsenal are ready to steal a march on their Prem rivals and secure Meyer in the summer.

Schalke CEO Christian Heidel recently said: “Max will be deciding shortly if he wants to stay at Schalke past the summer.

“Max is very happy here, Schalke is his home, we will try to make it him as comfortable financially as possible.

“He is playing the best season of his life, and the coach has found a position for him that Max didn’t believe he could play.

“Personally, I didn’t think he could either.”
