Euro Paper Talk: Spurs leading race for €60m Bundesliga defender

Matthias Ginter Germany

Tottenham are rivaling Atletico Madrid for a Bundesliga star, while the details of Mario Mandzukic’s contract offer from Manchester United have been revealed, according to Sunday’s European papers.

SPURS LEADING RACE FOR BUNDESLIGA DEFENDER

Tottenham are joint favourites to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter, according to reports in Germany.

Ginter, aged 25, has impressed for Monchengladbach since joining from Borussia Dortmund two years ago, with his form earning him a €60m price tag.

According to Bild, Tottenham and Atletico Madrid have made contact with the Bundesliga club over a potential move – although neither are close to matching the valuation.

Spurs do not want to go above €35m for the player, who has two years left on his contract, with the option for a third year.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are in danger of losing Toby Alderweireld, with Roma strongly linked, so may be forced to bring in a reinforcement before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

As for Atletico, they have lost long-serving defender Diego Godin to Inter Milan this summer, and after bringing in Felipe from Porto, are still looking for quality in the position.

If Monchengladbach can get the price they want for the versatile defender – who can also operate as a defensive midfielder or right-back – it would represent a tidy profit, after they paid Dortmund just €17m to sign him in 2017.
