Euro Paper Talk: Tottenham move for Brazil midfielder with €70m exit clause

Tottenham have enquired about signing a Brazilian midfielder with a €70m release clause, while a Manchester United midfield target has dropped a hint over a summer move, according to Tuesday’s European press.

TOTTENHAM TIPPED TO MOVE FOR FLAMENGO STAR

Tottenham have reportedly made an approach for Flamengo midfielder Gerson, as Jose Mourinho looks to strengthen his depleted squad this month.

Newspaper O Globo states that Spurs have made contact with the Brazilian club, wanting to know the player’s situation and how much they will have to pay to land him.

The outlet reports that Flamengo are not willing to let the 22-year-old leave for less €30m, having paid €11.8m to sign him from AS Roma just six months ago.

Having published the report, O Globo then got a message from Flamengo saying they would only sell if the player’s release clause of €70m was met.

Gerson played a major role as his club won the Brazilian League and the Copa Libertadores, and his box-to-box game and athletic ability is said to be perfect to stand up to the rigours of the Premier League.

Mourinho has made the signing of a new central midfielder his priority after Moussa Sissoko was ruled out until April, while record signing Tanguy Ndombele is also on the sidelines with a hip problem.

Spurs are, however, expected to imminently complete an 18-month loan deal, with an option to buy, for Benfica midfield ace Gedson Fernandes to ease those midfield concerns.
