Euro Paper Talk: Liverpool approach transfer wizard as strategy forms for Chelsea target after ‘dream season’; Tottenham man attracts new Serie A suitor

Liverpool are one of four Premier League clubs in talks for the signing of a La Liga midfield gem, while a rarely-seen Tottenham defender is on the radar of an Italian side – all in Friday’s European transfer gossip.

BIDDERS INCLUDING LIVERPOOL QUEUE UP FOR GABRI VEIGA

Liverpool have approached a so-called super agent in an attempt to unlock a deal to sign Gabri Veiga from Celta Vigo, according to a report – while the player has been reflecting on his current situation.

Veiga burst into prominence this season for Celta, scoring 11 goals from 36 La Liga appearances. He became La Liga’s player of the month in February 2023.

There has been plenty of anticipation about what his next step might be ever since. TEAMtalk exclusively revealed in May that Liverpool were leading the race to sign Veiga.

However, the interest in the Spain under-21 international is widespread. According to the latest from 90min, agent Jorge Mendes – who does not officially represent the player yet but is expected to have an influence on his career – has held talks with Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and Newcastle.

All four of them have made it clear they are willing to pay the €40m release clause in Veiga’s contract. In each case, there are different strategies to achieve it.

Suitors could either hit the €40m mark immediately with a bid, or offer even more than that amount but pay the fee in stages.

In addition to the four Premier League admirers, Veiga is also of interest to Barcelona, Real Madrid, Napoli and Marseille.

Midfield has emerged as a particular area of need for Liverpool this summer after the departures of James Milner to Brighton and Naby Keita to Werder Bremen, as well as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to a destination as yet unknown.

Alexis Mac Allister has already joined from Brighton, but more midfielders will have to arrive for Liverpool to feel comfortable with their options in the department.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have identified Veiga as a potential replacement for Mason Mount, who is on his way to Man Utd.

For now, the 21-year-old will be focusing on his international duties with Spain at the U21 Euros.

But he has been reflecting on his current situation at club level too in an interview with Spanish sports paper Marca.

“It was a dream season,” Veiga said. “I myself did not expect everything to be so well personally. Now you are assimilating everything you have done during the year, and you get goosebumps.

“Doing that with the team of your life and being so young… These are going to be unforgettable moments for me. It’s all a dream.”

Veiga added: “I have matured and I have learned a lot this year. I think I’m a better footballer at the start of every season. And that’s what it’s all about.”

By joining Man City or Newcastle, Veiga could step up to Champions League level, whereas he would in the Europa League with Liverpool. Chelsea have no European involvement to offer for next season.
