Euro Paper Talk: Liverpool hit panic button as Chelsea bid for £85m target

Liverpool have been spurred into action after Chelsea declared an interest in an £85m attacking target, while Tottenham are back in for a midfield powerhouse, according to Monday’s European transfer gossip.

Liverpool are reportedly ready to step up their efforts to sign Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey, following rumours that Chelsea are set to bid for the winger.

The 22-year-old, who still has three years to run on his contract in Germany, has become one of the most sought-after players in European football, with the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich all chasing his signature.

Bayern are known to have held a long-standing interest in the Jamaica international, but reports in the European press claim that Stamford Bridge chiefs have sanctioned an £85m bid for the player.

Bailey is having another solid season so far for Die Werkself, scoring seven times in 22 appearances in all competitions, while the Reds have also been linked with his Leverkusen team-mate Kai Havertz.

The likelihood of Jurgen Klopp trying to sign both players appears very slim, especially with Havertz also rated at around £90m.

It boils down to whether Liverpool feel that they need to strengthen their midfield with a player who could be a regular starter in Havertz, or push for a deal for Bailey – who would be a back-up for Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in the wide positions.

Chelsea’s stance might just force their hand, however, especially with lingering doubts over whether Mane or Salah will be at Anfield long-term.
