Euro Paper Talk: Liverpool chase €42m Tottenham target as Thiago upgrade

Tottenham target Marcel Sabitzer is now also wanted by Liverpool and Arsenal, while Chelsea are planning to steal a march on their rivals for their top strike target – all according to Tuesday’s Euro transfer gossip.

LIVERPOOL JOIN RACE FOR SABITZER

Liverpool have joined Tottenham and Arsenal in the race for Marcel Sabitzer, who could replace Georginio Wijnaldum.

That’s according to Todofichajes, who claim that Sabitzer looks increasingly likely to leave RB Leipzig this summer.

The Austrian has been a key player for Leipzig since joining them in 2014 and currently serves as their captain. However, he is out of contract in 2022, and may be looking for a new challenge.

Sabitzer has already been linked with a Premier League move. After he scored against Tottenham in last season’s Champions League, Spurs began to express an interest in him.

Reports earlier this month indicated that Tottenham are still in the hunt for Sabitzer, and could be the favourites to sign him.

But now, Todofichajes present a warning that it may not be so simple for Spurs. After Arsenal joined the race in December, so too have Liverpool now.

The Spanish report does not even mention Tottenham, instead suggesting a two-way battle between Arsenal and Liverpool for the 26-year-old.

Arsenal are looking to the future, aware that loanees Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos may not make their moves from Real Madrid permanent. Therefore, they are considering other midfield reinforcements.

Jurgen Klopp was delighted his Liverpool players were able to force RB Leipzig into mistakes and ‘put it all together’ for their first victory in four matches in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are still unsure if Georginio Wijnaldum will extend his contract with them. If he leaves as a free agent this summer, they will need a replacement.

Thiago Alcantara has not lived up to expectations since his move from Bayern Munich. The report even speculates that he could leave Liverpool.

However, even if Thiago does stay, Liverpool may be looking to bring in more competition. Sabitzer’s versatility would make him an interesting option.

The former Rapid Wien star can play as a winger or in a more central, attacking midfield role. He has mainly played centrally this season and has provided five goals and two assists from 18 Bundesliga games.

A player of Champions League experience, he could be a major asset to whichever team – Premier League or not – manages to sign him next.

Despite there being little time left on his contract, it is claimed that Sabitzer is valued at €42m.
